I was sitting in the office the other day (next to one of our Support guys) and I asked him what people are asking about. He said that the majority of the emails in the last few months have been about Outlook 2013. It seems that there have been quite a few changes with Outlook, as well as with Windows itself and that has left quite a few users, er…. confused. The Windows 8 desktop search doesn’t work with Outlook data anymore. As if learning to use Windows without a “Start” menu wasn’t enough of a change for users, now they have to go into Outlook itself to conduct email searches.

Other Outlook search add-ons don’t even work with Windows 8 or Outlook 2013. (See Xobni) This has led to a lot of people looking for a work-around. We have been telling our customers and potential customers that Lookeen will continue to work with Outlook 2013 data (and also Windows 8). While I won’t pretend to understand why Microsoft made the change, I can say that we have made Lookeen compatible with the new services. Even better, Lookeen works with Windows 8 as a desktop search and with Outlook 2013 as a mail search tool.
Not only did Windows 8 throw a wrench into how Outlook 2013 search tool works, but also with Windows 8.1, there was an update that made the Outlook 2013 Search tool fail completely. You can try to do a couple of things to get it working again, but you’re seeing a pattern of malfunction with Outlook Search aren’t you? Try to do these following steps:

This is where you need to check that Windows is actually even bothering to index your OST or PST files.
This should help with having the Outlook 2013 Search Tool up and running again, but to avoid the constant disturbances to how your Outlook search tool works, get an alternative to the search. Lookeen, as mentioned before, will better your search experience across the board.
The major difference between Lookeen and the Windows and Outlook 2013 native search fields are that Lookeen has only one search field for both.
